The Basics of Christianity

Part One: Salvation/ Blog/Lesson Two

What do we do to get Salvation?

Is it a free gift, and is it for everyone?

By our own freewill we choose to repent of our sins. This is something each individual must do for themselves. What does repent mean? It means turn from our sins and way of thinking.

Webster’s Dictionary = repent verb. 1):turn from sin 2) :regret,---repentance noun.

Jesus said, except we repent, we will all perish; (which means to be eternally (forever) separated from God).

Luk 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Act 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Parenthesis in the following Scripture are mine.

Act 17:30 And the times of this ignorance (before Jesus came with Truth) God winked at; but now (after Calvary) commandeth all men every where to repent:

We are saved by the Grace and Love of God, through faith:

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

God never says no to a repentant, remorseful and sincere heart; because God loves everyone, even the most sinful, evil person. Even Apostle Paul who wrote most of the New Testament books after his Salvation conversion. Paul had killed many of the Jews; or had them killed who were followers of Christ; but after his conversion, he won many to Christ. Paul was an Apostle, starting churches and leading and helping them. The New Testaments books that he wrote were some of his letters to these churches. So there is no sinner too bad for God to cleanse them from sin and fill them with His Spirit of Love.

Joh 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Our prayers cannot be just words from the lips only, but must be sincerely spoken with all our heart. We are saved by Grace through faith. What is faith?

Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The verse above has two hearings: Simply put:

1) It is hearing the Word of God preached, or read, and hearing the unction of God’s Spirit convicting us of sin.

2) As we repent, His Spirit then convinces and gives us the inter peace of knowing we are saved and our sins are washed away. This impression within us; we call “Hearing the voice of God,” or “Divine Assurance.”

God’s voice from within our spiritual heart may come as a still small voice, or it may come with a bang accompanied with a lot of human emotion. My son used to wonder why I cried when I prayed. That was just my human reaction to deeply felt emotion. At times they were tears of sincere compassion; called prayers of intercession for someone, or for an answer to prayer; and at times they were tears of joy. But of course every one that prays doesn’t have to cry. Each individual may react differently.

God’s Spirit will always accompany His word when it is read or spoken. He is faithful to beckon us to trust and believe in Him and except Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

After our Salvation experience, our lives should become new, we will think differently and have a new paradigm; or source for our knowledge, information and guidance:

2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

It pleases God when we receive Him into our heart; only then can He reveal Truth to us and direct our steps. God desires to communion and have fellowship with us; which is the reason He created Adam and Eve and told them to multiply. Jesus calls us his friend when we receive Him as Lord of our lives:

Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Joh 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Joh 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

And the Spirit of God, we call Holy Spirit lives in our spirit after Salvation and will continue to teach us the things of God. This is the Spirit of Jesus Christ. We believe in one God, one Spirit and one Lord; Deity in the Father in Heaven, Deity in Christ the Son and Deity in us the Holy Spirit, which is all one Spirit. Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” When we receive Christ as our savior: Deity comes and joins to our spirit, engulfing our spirit with His presence and love, spiritually washes the sins of our past away; which makes us born again by His Spirit. Water is a symbol of the Holy Spirit; just like we were born of water in the natural; our spirits are born again by the water of the Holy Spirit. This will be explained more in Lesson Six of this series; What Happens at Salvation?

What is our mind on most of the time? I realize we have to think about earthly things as we go to school and work on a job, but throughout the day our thoughts should wonder back to God and His purpose for us, which is in part, being an encourager and uplifting others around us. When we are attentive to the feelings and needs of others, God will open an opportunity for us to encourage and maybe even pray with them about their need.

Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Maybe you walked down an isle of a church once and repeated a prayer after the minister, but that seemed to be the extent of your experience with Christ. It may have left you still feeling empty and unfulfilled. You didn’t know what to do next; and fell back into your old way of life, never developing a daily walk with God. Maybe you have never felt the Love, Joy and Peace of God that fills your inter- being. It is sad for people to think, they got saved and that was all there was to it, when they may not have gotten saved at all; or they didn’t develop a relationship with Jesus Christ.

It may seem old fashioned, but I believe it was a good thing for people to be allowed to pray for a while at the alter when going up to receive Salvation. After all it may take longer for some to repent for all past sins and let the Holy Spirit; Spirit of Jesus join to their spirit to transform and give new life.

This experience shouldn’t be taken lightly. After all it is the most important decision you will ever make in this life, and determines where you will spend all eternity. When the Spirit draws and beacons you; when you believe on Jesus Christ as your Savior and believe Jesus is the Son of the living God, the messiah sent from Heaven to redeem lost mankind, then is the time for you to pray.

There are just three simple steps to receive Salvation and find the joy, love and peace of God that leads to everlasting life. God’s Spirit will join to your spirit now if you believe His Word; the Scriptures you have just read.

  • Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Messiah who died on the cross and arose on the third day.

  • Repent and confess your sins to Him.

  • And by faith, receive God’s free gift of Grace, your Salvation.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

The following is a prayer for guidance; the words are not magical words. A ritual will not save you, joining a church will not save and neither will water baptism save you:

Lord, I spiritually lay this fleshly body down in front of the altar of your mercy seat. Now cleanse me form all my sin and wrong doings. Cleanse my spirit from all of the offenses toward those who have disappointed me and done me wrong. I forgive everyone who has ever hurt me, and give you all the hurts of my past.

Forgive me Lord for blaming you and being angry with you for the bad things that have happened in my life. I understand now that my tribulations did not come from you. I know my blaming you has grieved you, but your unconditional Love for me never changed.

Thank you Jesus for Calvary, I love you and I receive you into my heart that you and I can become one in spirit. Cleanse me daily moment by moment as I die to my fleshly desires of sin. I will allow your Spirit to be my Teacher, Counselor, Comforter and guide. And I receive all you did for me at Calvary; healing for my mind, spirit and body.

Fill me with your joy and your peace that my joy might be full. I ask that you point my feet toward the mark of your high calling for me; no more detours, or wavering to the left or to the right.

Lord, teach me and reveal the knowledge of your Word to me that I might know you more each day. I will hide your Word in my heart that it might freely flow up out of my spirit like springs of living water all over me and those around me. For only then can I see those around me through your compassion and Love. Amen
